Fellow Citizens,
I want to share a few thoughts about the creation of Roseville’s new community newspaper, Roseville Reporter, in this, its first edition!
Roseville benefitted from having a community newspaper until 2018. Many of our neighbors have local newspapers: St Anthony Park, Shoreview, and White Bear Lake, Woodbury and Eden Prairie. And, there is a correlation between local news, a well-informed citizenry, and democracy. https://www.lwvwa.org/local-news#Get
Noting this, my wife challenged me: “With all your community connections—what are you doing to address the need (for a local paper)?” Accepting her challenge, I called a meeting of many leaders in Roseville, past and present, to see if there was a chance to get something started.
From that first meeting, the larger group coalesced to four citizens (our “core group”) willing to meet the challenge. With good advice and assistance from Scott Carlson, editor of The Bugle, a vision for our paper began to emerge.
We have made good progress! We established our mission, “To serve the community with trustworthy reporting and unbiased news, and to inspire civic responsibility and engagement.” We have incorporated and established a Board. We have applied for 501c(3) designation and hope to have it by the end of 2025. Most importantly, an initial anonymous financial contribution has helped fund start-up expenses and bring you this initial edition.
For now, we are entering the community in a digital format. We will be able to provide a monthly print edition later should the community desire it and provide the considerable extra finances to make a print edition possible.
We are proud of our work so far. We have now brought you a first edition of Roseville Reporter. Now it is up to you, our citizens, to meet the challenge of supporting this effort through financial support, subscriptions, and volunteer work.
