Shot down three times: A Vietnam story

June 30 @ 2:00 pm

Retired Capt. Dennis R. Darnell of the U.S. Marine Corps will tell his Vietnam story at a meeting of the Northeast Metro Golden K Kiwanis. This event is free and open to the public.

Darnell was shot down three times while serving as a forward Air Controller in 1968. The nature of the aircraft he flew constantly put him into the very font of action. He flew more than 1,500 combat mission hours over 700 missions. His commendations included 37 Air Medals, the Bronze Star and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

Kiwanis are an international organization dedicated to the well-being of children. The Northeast Metro Golden K Club is made up of retirees who meet weekly to hear outstanding speakers from academia, science, technology, government, engineering, or even Laurel and Hardy. They’re the largest club of this kind in the five-state region.

Members also volunteer as tutors in local schools, provide thousands of dollars in college scholarships to local grads, serve at local food shelves, maintain Howard Johnson Park and support organizations like NE Youth and Family Service, Kids in Need, Bridging Inc. and others.
