Van Thi Tran (1934 – 2026)
Maria Tran Thi Van of St. Paul, Minn. passed away on Aug. 5. She was 92.
Tran was born on Feb. 1, 1934 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
She is survived by her five sons, four daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral mass was held on Friday, Aug. 14 at St. Adalbert Church in St. Paul. Tran will be interred at Resurrection Cemetery in Mendota Heights, Minn.
The family asks for no gifts or monetary condolences.
Si Hu Chang (1948 – 2026)
Si Hu Chang of Roseville passed away on Aug. 7. He was 78.
Chang is survived by his wife Sui Pien Chao, children Christine Chang (Kevin Chung), Jeff Chang (Lily Chen) and Jerry Hsiao (Rachel Hsiao) and granddaughters LeAnn Chung, Jasmine Chung, Crystal Chung, Ruby Chung, Kylie Chang and Jaylene Chang.
Services were held on Friday, Aug. 14 at Mueller-Bies Funeral Home in Roseville as well as Acacia Park Cemetery in Mendota Heights.
Susan L. Kangas (1965 – 2026)
Susan “Suzy Q” Kangas of St. Paul passed away unexpectedly on Aug. 7. She was 61.
Kangas was born on March 21, 1965 in Minneapolis and dedicated much of her life to music, art and culture. She left school at 17 to play in the West Bank folk music scene, going on to study art at the University of Minnesota. She earned her degree in culinary arts from Minneapolis Community and Technical College, then worked for several years at the Minneapolis Women’s Club and later at the Saint Paul Yacht Club.
Like so many colorful, creative souls, Kangas also suffered from depression and substance abuse. She found solace in the love and support of her family, the therapy of painting and in new passions, such as her fascination for the history of her childhood neighborhood in Minneapolis. In recent years, she worked occasionally at the Cabooze where she was known as Suzy Q, singer and emcee of the locally famous Battle of the Jug Bands.
As Suzy’s health declined in recent times, her inability to continue being part of the city’s musical and cultural community was the cause of great sadness for her. We believe she is at peace now, undoubtedly dancing to the music of the spheres.
Kangas is preceded in death by her grandparents Milo and Lillian Iverson and Frances Kangas. She is survived by her parents Lora (Dean) Child and Bob (Colleen) Kangas and many friends.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
