Lis Tove Jorgensen of Minneapolis passed away on Sept. 22. She was 99.

Born in Copenhagen, Jorgensen was an elder child who loved to read and learn. Her teenage years were bookended by the Nazi occupation of Denmark, and she shared stories of courage and care from those years that shaped her family’s values.

Jorgensen became a U.S. citizen in 1955 and she remained active in the Danish-American community her whole life. She shared her love of reading through helping immigrant children as they were learning to read in Gilroy, Calif. and in Burnsville, Minn.

Jorgensen loved her grandchildren dearly. She savored good coffee, chocolate and a glass of white wine while watching Jeopardy. Throughout all the health challenges, she demonstrated thankfulness and persistence.
