Robert “Bob” Milton Lyden of Maplewood, Minn. passed away peacefully on Sunday. He was 95.

Lyden was born on Feb. 11, 1931 and was raised in the Frogtown neighborhood of St. Paul, Minn. Growing up in the aftermath of the Great Depression, he learned to appreciate the simple things in life, how to stretch his dollar and the value of hard work and perseverance. He attended Mechanic Arts High School in St. Paul.

At 19, Lyden enlisted in the Air Force, in line with his teenage fascination with the World War II planes that flew overhead to nearby Fleming Field in South St. Paul. While stationed in California, he met Jean, a switchboard operator who became his wife of 63 years.

Following his military service, Lyden returned to St. Paul and began a 23-year career in the grocery business at Steiner’s Market at Rice and Maryland, just blocks from where he grew up. He also built five homes for himself and his family throughout his lifetime. Whether maintaining a home, caring for a vehicle or tackling his next project, he was always busy and firmly believed there was always something that could be improved.

Bob also enjoyed billiards and was an accomplished bowler in his younger years. Known for his quick wit and good sense of humor, he enjoyed sharing a joke, a playful comment or a little friendly teasing across the table. His laughter and ability to make others smile were as much a part of the game as the competition itself.

Lyden was preceded in death by his wife Jean A. Lyden, parents Frank and Martha Lyden, sisters Lorraine Elling and Muriel Murphy and grandson Sullivan Lyden.

He is survived by his children Rob, Michael (Kelly), Chris (Lona), Pat, and Laura (Matt) McKenzie, 14 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Robert “Bob” Edgar Belland of Little Canada, Minn. passed away on Monday. He was 99.

Belland was born in St. Paul on Feb. 25, 1927, the oldest of seven children born to Edgar and Louise (Longtin) Belland. Raised in a French-Canadian family rooted in faith, patriotism and hard work, he carried those values throughout his life.

Belland proudly served his country during World War II, serving in the United States Navy during the final year of the war aboard several ships in the Pacific Theater, including service in the Philippines and Okinawa.

Following the war, Belland spent 45 years as an electrician with Mereen-Johnson Custom Engineered Machinery, where he wired large, complex wood-cutting machines. His remarkable ability to understand how things worked carried into every part of his life. He built his home in Little Canada, worked on cars, repaired appliances and could fix nearly anything. Having lived through the Great Depression, he valued hard work, a dollar well spent and never wasting anything. If something was broken, he would find a way to fix it. He simply never gave up.

Above all, Belland was devoted to his family. He was married to his beloved wife Antoinette (Toni) for 64 years and took great pride in being a husband and father. He showed his love through a lifetime of hard work, service, and always being there when his family needed him. He and Toni were avid square dancers and loved to polka, and music and dancing were a joyful part of family gatherings.

Belland was preceded in death by his wife Antoinette, son Robert Gerard “Bobby”, sister Bernice, and brothers Larry, Richard, Jim, Walter and George.

He is survived by his children Fr. David Belland, John Belland, Sr. Mary Dolores, Donna (Richard) Trent, Jerry (Jeanne) Belland and Patrick (Tonsha) Belland, grandchildren Andrew, Sara, Laura, Mikaela, Blake and Jennifer and great-grandchildren Quincy, Addison, Hayden, Felix, Cora, Teagan and Lilian.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered in the form of stipends for Holy Masses for Bob or donations to the Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary.
